DB (David Brookes) first started building Cobra replicas in 1992 along side an existing business which involved servicing and repairing regular production cars and restoring classics.
The first Cobra built was a Cortina based Rover V8 powered car, and after enjoying using this car for a year or so it was time for an upgrade.
The car was advertised, and a number of enquiries came in from surprisingly, Germany.
A few days later a Cobra replica dealer from Germany arrived and bought the car. He also asked if we could supply him with new built left hand drive cars. After a few telephone calls to different Cobra replica manufacturers we decided to build 5 Daxes initially.
Our German customer was so pleased with the cars he received that the order was changed to "on going". As a result, the servicing and repair side of the business was phased out to concentrate fully on what was a far more satisfying way of earning a living.
Over the next few years DB built over 35 LHD Cobras for the German and European market all for the trade. During 1997 the currency exchange rate fluctuations made it very difficult to supply the European dealers, so in order to keep the business running it was paramount that a UK customer base was established.
A new trade customer was found in the UK and DB were able to keep trading.
2001
DB decided to look at the retail market, as the introduction of the SVA (single vehicle approval scheme) put a number of people off the idea of building their own car. This was due to the potential problems with getting their cars "on the road" legally.
All our cars are SVA/IVA approved as a matter of course and are fully road legal, meeting all current motor industry standards.
To date we have built over 150 Dax Cobras, many of them for repeat customers.
2012
DB planned to move into the more authentic end of the market. To manufacture our own cars that are a true representation of the original 1960s icon. Including an exact copy of the original round tube chassis with a hand crafted aluminium body. Original pattern suspension and running gear. (No refurbished Jaguar axles on this one). In fact all parts are interchangeable with the real thing.
It was an ambitious plan and took 3 years and over 10,000 hours to realise, but in…….
2015. DB launched the DB427SC
2017. The DB Daytona Coupe joined the stable.
2018. The addition of the DB289FIA.
